ISO 9000 certification benefits, reality or myth?

ISO 9000 certification benefits, reality or myth?

G.P.M. Dick, The TQM Magazine (UK), Vol. 12 No. 6, 2000

Quotes claims by ISO and various certification registrars as to business benefits accruing from ISO 9000 certification. Probes their validity by examining research on linkage of business performance with quality ethos, and with quality control/assurance. Mentions various gurus in support of a positive relationship between business performance and quality, yet finds little commonality amongst such studies, stating both terms are ill defined. Establishes, however, a logic to support business performance improving with quality improvement. Opines that publications referring to ISO 9000 benefits are anecdotal, case study based, or report only descriptive statistics. Declares this shows benefit possibility, not actual proof. Uses research employing statistical data analysis of UK, Australian, and New Zealand firms to conclude that there is no consistent evidence to support ISO 9000 leading to lower costs through increased market share or a reduced salaries bill – though notes that firms with a strong TQM attitude fare better regarding business performance. Thinks ISO 9000 registrars should moderate their claims accordingly. Comments: Another view for those in the for/against ISO 9000 camps to consider!

Quality focus says: Uses international research to add to theory and practice in the field of quality systems.
