IAIA06 – power, poverty and sustainability – the role of impact assessment

Stavanger, Norway, May 23-26, 2006

The 26th Annual Conference of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) will take place on May 23-26, 2006, in Stavanger, Norway. The conference will highlight how impact assessment can assist developing and rapidly urbanizing countries in their work toward poverty eradication and achieving the millennium development goals, and how national development agencies, international financing institutions, and NGOs can contribute by integrating environmental concerns into their practice.

It will focus on issues of particular relevance to the Nordic region while giving continued attention to trends and topics from other regions and previous conferences. It will also discuss how impact assessment in its various forms can be an important instrument to achieve sustainable development. International Disaster Reduction Conference

Davos, Switzerland, August 27-September 1, 2006

As recent mega-disasters have shown, risk management from the perspective of a single field is not adequate to address the complex threats to today's society. The conference will, therefore, address different kinds of risks (e.g. risks due to natural hazards, technical risks, biological and chemical risks but also pandemics, terrorism, climate change, endemic risks, etc.). A truly integrated and participative approach is planned to ensure that the valuable lessons learned about risk reduction from a wide spectrum of fields are applied correctly for the benefit of communities, countries, and regions. The IDRC Davos 2006 will be a valuable forum and strategic platform for the world's risk management community. The program will include topical plenary sessions and panel debates, scientific and policy-oriented thematic sessions, special regional sessions for Africa, Asia, North and Latin America and Europe and side events organized by different international and national organizations, exhibits, and special recognition of international pioneers in risk reduction.

Experts from all over the world are invited to submit abstracts and contribute to the unique, interdisciplinary dialogue and discussion of IDRC Davos 2006. Further details are available online at: www.davos2006.ch

2nd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development

Hamburg, Germany, September 13-15, 2006

There has been over the past five years substantial progress in the implementation of education for sustainable development in European countries. Thanks to the efforts by the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Baltic 21 and the European Reference Point for Technology Transfer for Sustainable Development among others, there is a conspicuous move in European countries towards a wider incorporation of sustainability as part of people's lives.

Yet, despite the current level of progress, developments between countries are not even. Some are at the forefront, whilst others are lagging behind. This north-south and east-west divide is no longer acceptable and steps to overcome today's differences need to be undertaken. It is believed that an event where information exchange on ideas, projects and initiatives takes place will be in this context useful, both in allowing a closer dialogue and in catalysing more efforts at both a country and regional level. The first European Environmental Education Fair was held in 1996 and was a great success, with over 100 delegates from 14 European countries. Time is now prone to review progresses in this field. It is on this basis that the 2nd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development will be organised.

The aims of the 2nd European Fair on Education for Sustainable Development are threefold to:

  1. 1.

    provide European organisations with an opportunity to display and present their works (i.e. policies research, activities, practical projects) as they relate to education for, with and about the environment;

  2. 2.

    foster the exchange of information, ideas and experiences acquired in the execution of projects, from successful initiatives and good practice;

  3. 3.

    discuss the value and need for national strategies to implement education for sustainable development in European countries both in a formal and non-formal context.

Last but not least, one of the aims of the event will be to provide inputs which will be useful to UNECE as it implements the UNECE Strategy for Education for Sustainable Development.
