EU considers legal action over Clémenceau

The European Commission could launch infringement proceedings against France for sending the aircraft carrier Clémenceau to India for dismantling. According to a position paper for EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas, the vessel contains hazardous materials and so cannot legally be exported to a non-OECD country for dismantling. The note also rejects France’s argument that the Clémenceau is not covered by EU waste rules because it is a warship. The European Commission is continuing a formal assessment.
