IEA warns of two-fold rise in global CO2

Global carbon dioxide emissions will more than double by 2050 unless further counter-measures are taken, the International Energy Agency (IEA) warned in the G8 meeting in St Petersburg.

In a report that extends previous IEA projections by 20 years, the IEA says that boosting greener technologies could bring emissions back to current levels. For example, further energy efficiency measures in the building, industry and transport sectors could reduce electricity demand by a third compared with today.

Under the report’s core scenario, technologies like carbon capture would contribute 20-28 per cent of total CO2 emission reductions. It projects that renewable energy would provide 34 per cent of all electricity and nuclear power 16-19 per cent.
