Forest fires “are speeding up Arctic ice melt”

“Large and increasingly frequent forest fires in boreal regions [forest areas of the northern temperate zone] are the primary cause” of atmospheric long-range transport of carbon particles to the Arctic, where they speed up melting of glaciers and sea ice, suggests a study by Norwegian researchers. The study shows that south and east Asian anthropogenic emissions are less important sources than has been suggested. But it warns that global warming will mean even more boreal forest fires.
