UK air quality worsens in 2006

Air quality in the UK worsened in 2006 after having improved over the past two years, according to government figures. The number of days with “moderate or higher” pollution increased to an average of 41 in urban areas (22 in 2005) and 56 in rural areas (40 in 2005). Ozone continued to contribute most to pollution, followed by fine particles (PM10). Sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide now rarely if ever reach moderate or higher pollution levels.
