VAT may support energy efficiency push in Europe
The European Commission has floated the idea of an EU-wide reduced value-added tax (VAT) rate for energy efficient appliances to drive their uptake. In a communication on simplifying the EU’s VAT rules, the Commission says a preferential rate could be applied to products for energy efficiency and environmental purposes.
The Commission communication asks member states for their opinion on reduced VAT rates by the end of the year. The commission will draw up legislative proposals by early 2009. EU tax proposals must be supported by all member states to become law.
