Welcome to another issues of MEQ. Readers will find here a further set of interesting papers dealing with matters related to environmental management and environmental quality from different parts of the world.

This editorial focuses on a matter widely discussed internationally, namely the reduction of greenhouse emissions. The Confederation of British Industry (CBI) has for example published a new report entitled Climate Change: Everyone’s Business (available at: www.avtclient.co.uk/climatereport/) which calls for a much greater sense of urgency if the UK is to meet its targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Indeed, since the Kyoto Protocol was produced, many countries are behind schedule and only a few have managed to fully achieve the goals set in the Protocol. The CBI argues that a failure to act will mean that the UK (and, by analogy, other countries) may also miss out on the commercial opportunities that will emerge on the pathway to a low carbon economy.

The report has been produced by the CBI’s Climate Change Task Force, which is made up of business leaders from key sectors of the UK economy, and is informed by a major study commissioned from McKinsey. It concludes that substantial changes will be needed in the way the economy works if the UK is to meet its goals and that, while many of the technologies and solutions required already exist, the pace and scale of implementation of these must now be accelerated.

MEQ will keep its readers informed on progresses related to the issue of greenhouse gases and about efforts to reduce them.

Enjoy your reading!
