Sweden issues new pesticide labelling guidelines

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 21, Issue 1

Swedish manufacturers and importers of pesticides will be issued with new guidelines for labelling their products, national chemicals agency KemI has stated. The move is part of a plan to reduce pesticide risks between 2010 and 2013.

The guidelines, which are to be published by the end of the year, will make it easier for farmers and other users to find instructions and information about potential risks, says the agency. For example, essential parameters such as treatment frequency and dosage are to be presented in tabular form. The guidelines are the first of several measures to be announced as part of the pesticide action plan. Other elements include a target of “near-zero” residues in surface and groundwater, the use of risk indicators and the promotion of “integrated pest management or organic farming”.
