European Commission (EC) unveils LIFE+funding plan for 2014-2020

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 23, Issue 3.

The EC wants to launch a new type of projects to support environmental law implementation under its LIFE+ environmental funding programme during the 2014-2020-budget period. The new integrated projects will focus on implementation at a regional or national level. Examples will include regional Natura 2000 networks, river basin management plans, cross-border flood prevention strategies and climate adaptation plans.

The plan is part of the commission's detailed funding proposal for the programme. In June 2011, it announced it intended to spend €3.2 bn on LIFE+. The majority of these funds (about €2.7 bn) will be allocated to the programme's environmental pillar. LIFE+ will continue to provide funding for environmental groups, with a maximum co-financing rate of 70 per cent for certain operational and administrative costs.
