Malta launches biodiversity strategy

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 23, Issue 4.

A draft national biodiversity strategy and action plan aimed at protecting Malta's unique biodiversity was recently launched by the Environment Ministry. The strategy, which encompasses all ministries, is open for public consultation. It includes proposals that would give direction on how to protect biodiversity from 2012 to 2020. The strategy has 19 targets under five pillars and includes 18 measures, which cover the strategies of the UN and the EU and is linked with the national environment and the environment development strategies. One of the targets is for 30 per cent of the threatened species to be in favourable status and improved by 2020. The pillars include halting the trend of decreasing biodiversity. It tackles direct pressures such as invasive species and pollution and talks about improving biodiversity, particularly on the management of sites.
