EEA report – protected areas in Europe - an overview

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 24, Issue 2.

The European Environment Agency has produced a report that provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of protected areas in Europe, and aims to assist policymakers and the wider public in understanding the complexity of the current systems of protected areas. The report is unique as it is one of few publications that survey protected areas on a pan-European level, despite widespread presence of protected areas in all European countries. The report finds that great progress has been made in the 20 years since the adoption of the Habitats Directive. However, there is still much more work to be done, with less than 20 per cent of the species and habitats listed by the Habitats Directive having favourable conservation status.
