Article Type: Editorial From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 24, Issue 3.

Welcome to another issue of MEQ. As usual, the journal includes a set of very interesting papers on aspects of environmental quality management from across the world. On this Editorial, I would like to elaborate on the newly published “Global Energy Assessment” (GEA), is a culmination of a five-year initiative to assess the global energy challenges of our rapidly changing world. The GEA identifies the urgent need for a sustained and comprehensive strategy to resolve the issues facing sustainable development, including poverty eradication, climate change mitigation, health, energy security, and energy access.

The publication (see Books and Resources section) not only lists many comprehensive solutions to our global energy challenges, but also identifies the major energy challenges and evaluates the energy resources and technological options available to build sustainable energy systems. In addition, it presents options for policies and investments needed to make these future systems a reality are outlined.

The 100 page Summary for Policy Makers and the Technical Summary can be downloaded free of change by going to: www.iiasa.ac.at. Since energy issues are very important matters, this journal will continue to attach a special emphasis to them. Indeed, on this issue of MEQ and many others, energy papers are a common feature and we shall continue this tradition.

Enjoy your reading!
