Central Asian governments tackle the economics of land degradation

Article Type: News From: Management of Environmental Quality: An International Journal, Volume 24, Issue 6.

Central Asian countries are now discussing the idea of a regional study on the economics of land degradation. This should be used as a first step towards actions at national and regional levels. The idea for this initiative, presented at the UN Conference for Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in June 2012, is now being pursued by the five Central Asian countries (Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Turkmenistan). A regional, ten-year, multi-donor partnership program to address land degradation and desertification called the ‘Central Asian Countries Initiative on Land Management’ (CACILM), will soon be launched.
