Time for Design 2 - English Partnerships

Time for Design 2 English Partnerships

Successful design practice is illustrated in the new edition of Time for Design published today by English Partnerships.

Following enormous demand by the market, English Partnerships has responded by expanding on the now universally recognised design principles in the first edition of Time for Design, to produce an updated edition focusing on the successful applications of these principles using case studies including the new Millennium Village at Greenwich Peninsula.

The guide covers concepts including: design principles, building design and commercial sense, site assessment, design and the community, the changing workplace, housing, project presentation and design competition.

In this new edition, English Partnerships has drawn on its nationwide experience of projects, identifying the need to place greater importance on the environmental impact of schemes concentrating on energy efficiency, telecommunications, transportation and for building in safety. Further emphasis has also been placed on design and the community incorporating disability and local artists and crafts people.

Chief Executive of English Partnerships, Anthony Dunnett, comments: "English Partnerships is committed to the highest standards of design. This is crucial when creating an attractive and safe environment in all the projects we fund, or in which we are partners".

Anthony Dunnett continues: "We are of the view that there is both good and bad design, and that such judgements are not just an issue of taste. In this second edition of Time for Design, which itself is both visually striking in design and impact, we have concentrated on using a set of proven design principles with the aim of creating an attractive environment for people to live, work and play".

In his preface, Lord Rogers of Riverside welcomes the guide, commenting: "The need now is to help the inexpert to help themselves. This is best done, as in most spheres of human creativity, by example. I therefore welcome the emphasis this new edition places on case studies".

He added: "But we still need to remind all agencies involved in regeneration that it's not simply about economics. It is about health and happiness, too. With its national overview, English Partnerships is well placed to take a longer view of people's needs to create models of good practice, especially in the fast-developing area of public housing".
