Pira's Paper & Board Group to launch first product for paper industry

The Paper and Board Technology Group at Pira announces the development of its first product for the paper industry the Scanner Measurement System (SMS).

Dr Graham Moore Commercial Manager of the group says that the introduction of the SMS will bring significantly improved objectivity to Quality Control procedures in the paper industry. He explains, "Although we have been developing image analysis-based applications at Pira since 1989 and have introduced many paper and print measurement routines, the SMS is our first product to be launched on the market. We have looked closely at industry requirements for such a system and we are confident that the SMS will address needs such as minimal set-up times, user-friendliness and portability."

The SMS is a flat-based scanner measurement system that can capture a single image of a sample up to an area of 210 × 297mm (size A4). It has considerable advantages over camera-based scanner systems, including:

  • minimal set up times;

  • easy-to-use menus which enable non-technical staff to operate the system;

  • the elimination of the need for a dark room, allowing the SMS to be located anywhere within a production facility;

  • the ability to examine a larger image area in a single frame (camera systems require multiple images to examine the same area);

  • significant cost reductions as the need for special equipment such as frameboards, camera lenses and specialised lighting has been removed.

Dr Moore points out that the system currently includes five applications; ink particle analysis, formation, wiremark, sharpness factor and print mottle. He adds, "Because the system is modular the applications are available separately which reduces the cost even more. This also enables future applications to be added to the system as they are developed."

Custom built systems can also be developed upon request for specific visual testing and can be supplied as a separate stand-alone system, or can be added to the existing SMS.
