Booth refit for Peugeot Ryton plant

Durr UK, Warwick has received a special thanks from Peugeot for its handling of a contract for modifications to the car makers paint-shop facilities at the Ryton plant near Coventry. Following the decision to upgrade its main production colour spray-booth by replacing the paint application machines, Peugeot chose Durr to undertake the modifications necessary to accommodate the new equipment. And the project has been completed with the minimum of disruption to the plant's output of Peugeot's mid range 306 series.

In a letter thanking Durr for the successful completion of the project, Peugeot's senior facilities engineer, Richard Shale acknowledged the challenges involved in installing new equipment into an existing booth structure. "The added complication in fitting the new equipment alongside the existing equipment, still in commission, presented all of us with a few worrying moments. Durr's cooperation in making best use of the funds available to us has enabled us to create the best possible facility within the constraints of the project", he said.

The work included: widening the booth and strengthening the framework to support the air supply plenum; refurbishing the inner lining and repositioning access doorways; refurbishing and installing new exhaust scrubber units and the provision of water flood wash facilities. New walkways and floor grids and plates were also installed. Durr also fitted new overhead platforms together with all the electrical cabling and panel installations for the spray booth controls and safety monitoring systems.

All operations requiring access to the booth were scheduled during weekends and other routine breaks in production. Working in conjunction with three other main contractors Durr applied strict codes of working practice in line with CDM requirements. Other important considerations included the maintenance of absolute cleanliness throughout the project. Plastic sheeting was installed to seal off work areas from the paint-shop facilities. Designated areas of work operations were all clearly identified and all personnel and sub-contractors visiting the site were fully briefed on their responsibilities for health and safety.
