The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published new guidance on the design, construction, operation and maintenance of installations used for the storage of flammable liquids in fixed tanks.
This information applies to new installations and to existing installations where reasonably practicable. The guidance is aimed at managers and supervisors involved in storing flammable liquids and is relevant to many industries such as the chemical, petrochemical, paint, solvent and pharmaceutical industries.
The booklet helps in the assessment of the risks arising from the storage of flammable liquids and it describes measures to control those risks. Assessment by employers and the self employed, of the risks to workers and others who may be affected by their activities is one of the requirements of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1992.
Advice on how to comply with the relevant parts of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Highly Flammable Liquids and Liquefied Petroleum Gases Regulations 1972 and other relevant legislation is also given within the booklet.
