Marl CREANOVA Spezialchemie GmbH, Marl, a Hüls Group company, presented its new developments in the field of powder coatings at the Powder Coatings Europe in Amsterdam. In addition to VESTAGON B hardeners for epoxy and hybrid powders, the company also showed cross-linking agents for polyurethane (PUR) powders, hardeners for achieving a "salt-and-pepper effect", powder coating additives and polyamide powders for fluidized bed coatings.

VESTAGON BF 1310 is a newly developed blocking agent-free cross-linking agent for PUR powders which gives the polyurethane powder coatings weathering resistance and light stability as well as a high surface hardness and good resistance to solvents and hot water. It is based on the same raw materials as the successful conventional polyurethane crosslinking agents, but in contrast to these also has a special molecular design which, it is claimed, makes the use of blocking agents superfluous. The demand for environmental compatibility can thus be better satisfied than with crosslinking agents containing blocking agents. At the same time, the crosslinking agent exhibits a higher reactivity and functionality.

Flexible in the formulation, VESTAGON BF 1310 can be combined with a wide range of OH-functionalized polyesters (linear or branched, with hydroxyl numbers from 25-350) to produce tailor-made powder coating systems. The results are said to be economically attractive coatings with numerous potential applications.

The VESTOWAX product range includes hard paraffins and hard waxes which are used as processing agents or in micronized form as matting agents.

VESTAGON EP-B 300 is a matting hardener for epoxy resin and epoxy resin polyester powder coatings with which reproducible "salt-and-pepper effects" can be achieved in one shot, i.e. in a single process. VESTAGON EP-B 300 is similar in structure to the matting hardeners VESTAGON B 55 and B 68, but has been modified so that it produces dark speckles in the finished coating. The result is a "salt-and-pepper effect" in light coloured coatings, the extent of which can be selectively set via the metering of the hardener. According to Hüls in contrast with the significantly more complex dryblend process for comparable powder coatings, the effect can be easily reproduced at any time. The product is said to be characterized by excellent levelling properties and allows very decorative matt films to be created.

Metal coatings with VESTOSINT, a polyamide 12 from CREANOVA, are said to be resistant to abrasion and chemicals, impact resistant and offer durable corrosion protection even under extreme conditions. Applied in the fluidized bed process, it reportedly has proven effective in a wide range of applications. Examples are baskets for dishwashers, water pipes, drinking water pumps of grey cast iron, universal joint shafts for trucks and heavy machinery or the ceiling constructions of large halls.

Particularly for outdoor applications, there has been only a limited range of colours available, as fluidized bed coating powders often have only a limited weathering resistance, depending on their pigmentation. One solution here is the fluidized bed double coating process newly developed by CREANOVA with which practically unlimited colours are possible with corrosion and weathering resistant coatings of VESTOSINT.

With this new coating technology, shopping trolleys in the typical company colours are thus now just as possible as colourful garden and park furniture or playground toys. During the process, the workpieces are first dipped in pigmented standard powder ­ VESTOSINT 111 coloured ­ and then in weathering-resistant unpigmented VESTOSINT 1191 in quick succession in a single heating process. The process is controlled in such a way that the coating thickness corresponds to that of conventional single coatings. The results are stated to be coloured double coatings which are not only more weathering resistant but also more abrasion resistant, more flexible and glossier than the single coatings.
