Training needs for end users

Training needs for end users

Keywords British Coatings Federation, Paints, Training

How often does the paint chemist find that all his/her work in evolving new surface coatings technology comes to naught when the end user insists on his own tried and trusted application methods. "Looks a bit thick, chuck some white spirit on it!"

The British Coatings Federation is to be congratulated on the study it has just completed, in conjunction with the Painting and Decorating Federation and other kindred associations, into the training needs of end users. Both decorating and industrial coatings were included.

The main findings are that end users:

  • placed emphasis on health, safety and environmental issues, whereas manufacturers thought that the application of new coatings would have the greatest influence on the long-term competitiveness of the industry.

  • were generally satisfied with the information they received from manufacturers, and manufacturers themselves were also satisfied with the information they supply to end users. However, much less information was made available to trainers and colleges, although they were generally happy with the quality of this information.

  • would like further information to come via traditional means of delivery, manufacturers' literature, etc., which is how the manufacturers say they will provide information.
