A water-based catalyst, specially developed to reduce cure times in coatings applications, has been introduced by Baxenden Chemicals Ltd.

Trixene DP 9B/1402 is a surfactant stabilised catalyst dispersion in water. It was developed to improve the cure time in the crosslinking reaction of the blocked isocyanate emulsion, Trixene BI 7986, with hydroxy functional polymers such as Xenacryl DP9B/1267.

According to Baxenden the water-based catalyst improves the cure profile to more commercially attractive speeds. Experiments at levels as low as 0.2 per cent on the total system (polymer and isocyanate) have dramatically cut the time required to achieve full cure at 125°C from 45 to ten minutes.

Trixene DP 9B/1402 is designed to be incorporated into the coating formulation during the compounding stage to enable a stable, rapid curing, one pack system to be made. The resultant coating based on the Xenacryl hydroxy functional polymer and Trixone BI 7986, displays excellent solvent resistance with the added bonus of solvent free technology.

The Xenacryl hydroxy functional grades are available with a range of glass transition temperatures to allow the formulator control over the coating flexibility. Typical uses are in automotive, white goods and coil coatings, where demand for low temperature curing is becoming ever more critical.
