The gradual improvement in the world economic situation that is predicted over the coming years is reflected by the forecast growth in future demand for paint in Western and Central Europe. The present usage of over 5.4 million tons is predicted to increase to 6.2 million tons in 2005 and to over 7.0 million tons by the year 2010. This is one of the conclusions of the latest edition of the biennial study compiled by Information Research Limited.

This report reviews trends in the usage of the main types of coatings materials, with up-to-date estimates of national demand in 26 countries up to the year 2010. The structure of the industry is reviewed in some depth, particularly with regard to the plethora of acquisitions that have occurred in the past 17 years. There have been almost 150 national and around 165 pan-European acquisitions of companies, as well as almost 53 partial acquisitions of specific business units. In addition, 45 US firms have been bought by the European companies, and 33 in Europe by US companies. The most significant of these are listed in this report, and the most likely future predators and their targets are identified.

The estimated shares of the leading firms in each national market are given in this study, highlighting the changes in market positions that have occurred over the last few years, particularly the increased shares of Akzo Nobel and ICI. The growing strengths of the multinational chemical groups in the industry are particularly noted, as well as the increasing realisation that an industry hitherto considered as mature has gradually transferred itself into one with a high-technology image.
