Recently delivered to Murman Fishing Company Ltd, Cyprus, the trawler/seiner "Murman 2" is the second fishing vessel to be built at the Astilleros y Servicios Navales SA (Asenav) shipyard, Valdivia, Chile, for service in European waters. As a result of a joint venture between Murman Fishing and a Russian group, she will fish herring and blue whiting in the North Atlantic.

In close co-operation with the owners, Asenav chose Jotun coating systems to provide full protection for the vessel against corrosion, abrasion and fouling. The coating contract was won by Industrias Ceresita SA, the Jotun group's Santiago-based Chilean company, the coatings being manufactured at the recently-expanded Jotun-Henry Clark Ltd production plant in Flixborough, South Humberside.

Of Vik and Sandvik design, the "Murman 2" (Hull No. 121) was built to the highest Det Norske Veritas' classification (1A1 Fishing Vessel), and has a total length of 74.5m, a breadth on frame of 12.6m and a depth (lst deck) of 8.2m. The vessel has an insulated fish hold capacity of 1,970m3 and a refrigerated seawater cooling system rated at 450m3, 18°C to 0-1°C in five to six hours. She accommodates 20 persons and, in ballast conditions, develops a speed of 19.3kn.

Jotun manufactures a comprehensive range of marine coatings and, using carefully chosen products from this range, systems were formulated to give cost-effective protection for the differing working areas on board the "Murman 2".

For the hull below the waterline, the Jotun system comprised "Marathon" mineral-flake-reinforced epoxy coating, "Safeguard" coal-tar epoxy, and "Seamate HB 66" self-polishing antifouling. "Marathon" claims long-term protection in the toughest of working conditions, and was also chosen for the fish hold of the "Murman 2". "Seamate HB 66" offers up to 60 months' antifouling protection for vessels with speeds of 6 to 18 knots.

The topsides of the "Murman 2", together with her superstructure, were treated with "Penguard" epoxy primer, "Primastic Universal" epoxymastic and "Pioner Topcoat".

Jotun Paints is a world innovator in epoxymastic treatments, and "Primastic Universal" is said to provide a good maintenance performance at reasonable cost.

The protective system chosen for the vessel's external deck, external bridge deck, between deck and netbin bulwark, consisted of "Penguard" epoxy primer and "Jotamastic 87", which is Jotun's premium epoxymastic treatment, giving optimum protection in arduous working environments. A low-temperature version of "Jotamastic 87" was also used for the bilge engine room.

To protect the ballast tanks "Balloxy HB Light" was chosen for the "Murman 2". A modified epoxy treatment with good penetration, this product is stated to be free from the hazards of isocyanate and coal tar. "Balloxy HB Light" is not only light in colour to help application and inspection in dark, restricted spaces, but also offers visual control over both mixing and applied thickness.
