Instrument measures paint gloss and thickness at the same time

Keywords Measurement, Paints, Sheen instruments

A new instrument which measures paint gloss and film thickness at the same time has been introduced by Sheen Instruments, UK (see Plate 3).

Plate 3 TRIMICROGLOSS-PLUSµ allows quality control checks to be made on the gloss and coating thickness of painted or powder coated panels in a single measurement

Sheen reports that TRIMICROGLOSS-PLUSµ allows quality control checks to be made on the gloss and coating thickness of painted or powder coated panels in a single measurement. This saves the time of busy quality control operators and allows the relationship between gloss and thickness to be examined because the measurements taken are very close together on the surface of the panel.

The unit simultaneously measures gloss at 20°, 60° or 85°, and thickness up to 500 µm, allowing a complete evaluation of the appearance properties of the surface. It is said to be suitable for use with ferrous and non-ferrous metals. If required, the measurements of glossand thickness may be carried out independently.

TRIMICROGLOSS-PLUSµ has been designed for easy operation. All measurement functions are accessed by using two buttons on the front panel so it can be used by unskilled operators after minimal training.

The software, which is supplied with each instrument, makes record keeping easy and allows data to be transferred directly to a spreadsheet for analysis.
