The first meeting in 1999 of the Printing and Coating Forum in Wales took place recently in the Taliesin Theatre, University of Wales Swansea. The theme was "Developments in Digital and Pre-Press Technology". The Keynote Speaker was Bill Ray, CEO of Group Infotech. Bill is one of the world's leading authorities on pre-press. He is actively involved in the data file exchange standards for the US and chairman of the TAGA Technical Papers Committee (responsible for organising their Annual International Conference).

The other speakers included Rick Mitchell, technical director of Domino Printing Science, one of the UK's pioneering ink jet manufacturers and Geoff Brett a leading independent consultant who reviewed the progress of digital printing and considered its implications for the "printing industry". Origin Reprographics have been at the fore in the practical application of geometric screening in producing separation. Rob Jones described the benefits and problems they have experienced with this technique.

For those who have not encountered them before, Gemini Digital Colour were one of the first companies to install an E print system. This was so successful that it led to their closing their offset presses to focus on digital only. Bob Whittaker has been involved in this transformation. As the final speaker of the day, Dr Tim Claypole focused on the prediction of tone gain from experimental trials, an area which in all modesty, Swansea leads the world.
