Durr UK has secured a prestigious contract to design and install plastic bumper painting facilities for Visteon Automotive Systems India. Due for completion in April 1999, the facilities will form part of a new purpose-built plant for the production of injection moulded plastic components. The plant, which is located in Chennai, will supply finished sets of front and rear bumpers to a nearby assembly line being set up by MFI Ltd to produce a new model, similar to the Ford Fiesta, for sale in India.

Much of the equipment for the new plant will be procured locally and the project is being handled as a joint venture between Durr UK and Durr India Pte Ltd. Durr UK is responsible for the design of the plant and project management through to supervision of the installation and commissioning.

Designed to handle a throughput capacity of up to ten sets of front and rear bumpers an hour, the plant will comprise a single loop process covering preparation, manual spraybooths, flash-off area, curing ovens, cooling zone, final inspection and storage.

Bumpers will be sprayed manually in colour batches, using air spray guns fed from portable 25 litre paint systems. In operation the plant can either produce finished bumpers by cycling the loop from primer to colour topcoat or alternatively it can produce primed bumpers continuously for storage and subsequent finish painting on demand.

Air supplies and air conditioning will play an important part of the utility services. Each of the air replacement units will be fitted with refrigeration systems to provide cool air for ventilating the spraybooths.

Durr India in conjunction with Durr Systems of Germany, is also supplying the vehicle paintshop. Designed for capacities of between 20,000 to 100,000 units per year over two shifts, the facilities include pretreatment and electro-coat as a continuous-running spray and dip system with overhead conveyor, curing ovens, cooling zones and working decks. A common spray booth is being used for primer and top coat application.
