Specialist coaters and OEMs are said to be set to reap a series of major benefits following the announcement of Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) approval for Plascoat PPA571.

According to Plascoat the versatile coating with which many coaters have become familiar in a variety of other areas of application is now poised to break the traditional coatings stranglehold on the potable water fittings and pipework market and give more coaters the chance to target the water industry.

As well as advantages in processibility, that PPA571 is said to offer coaters and water sector customers typical savings of up to 30 per cent over the use of conventional coating materials are now claimed.

Already with EC approval and the specific support of the German and Belgium control agencies, the Department of the Environment's DWI has approved PPA571 in contact with water for drinking, washing, cooking or food production purposes.

The approval comes at a time when international legislation on volatile organic compounds (VOCs) used in coating primers is becoming tighter. PPA571 is self adhering and does not require a primer eliminating the problem and contributing to the large cost savings believed possible through a switch to PPA571.

Lower material density, without affecting the coating thickness or its integrity, is said to be another area of cost reduction, while time is saved in post-application testing. A visual inspection is all that is required to confirm that PPA571 has fully bonded with the pre-treated substrate, the gloss finish indicating successful application.

PPA571 claims good long term adhesion, although applied to the cleaned steel in a single shot without using a primer. The coating's other properties include robustness and excellent resistance to pollutants.
