Eager to complement the range of facilities[1] set up to improve the use of chlorinated solvents, Elf Atochem has developed a functional container for solvents which, it is reported, guarantees safe transport, storage and use, whilst eliminating all risks of emissions. This container is now available in the european market under the name "conteneur Eco-Per".

The chlorinated solvent is contained in a traditional drum placed inside a double-walled container, which therefore acts as a veritable mobile drip-vessel. Made of galvanised steel, the container features a tight lid and a fast-locking device which prevents mechanical damage in case of impact or fall. As a result, there is believed to be no risk of accidental contamination during transport, storage or handling, in accordance with the strictest European regulations including the future directive on volatile organic compounds.

Designed for filling and discharging machines without any risk of leak, the container is linked to the machine via a sealed connection through a purpose-built anti-drip stop-valve and a gas return device. Filling takes place using a pump integrated in the container. A ball-cock ensures a smooth discharge. In addition, in order to prevent handling errors, the device is clearly marked to differentiate between containers for new product and containers for used product earmarked for recycling. Both types of containers are shuttle containers.

The functional benefits of the Eco-Per container is said to represent an optimum technical choice based on guaranteed leakproof and emission-free transport, storage and transfer operations (filling and discharge of machines) and therefore, claims:

  • increased protection (hygiene and safety) of operators who run no risk of accidental contamination or exposure to solvent vapours during handling;

  • optimised use of chlorinated solvents in closed circuits through guaranteed sealed equipment both in machines and at the beginning and end of cycles.

Eco-Per containers are available to users via the network of distributors of Elf Atochem's range of chlorinated solvents in France and in other European countries.

Note 1. Elf Atochem set up the ECO-PER company in association with Sarp Industries (a subsidiary of Compagnie GÅnÅrale des Eaux) to provide in France a comprehensive service for treating used solvents (separation of spent solvents at source, packaging and storage, valorisation options, reprocessing of products to their original standard specification, and waste disposal).
