Abbey Attachments supply a range of equipment for the lifting and storing of drums to all sectors of industry, either on contract hire or purchase.

"Handling and storing drums effectively, particularly large 200 litre size barrels, can frequently present challenges for companies", says Paul Saunders, operations director for Abbey Attachments. "A vast range of materials, from solid and liquid chemicals, hazardous slurry and waste, to powders, and oils used in the food manufacturing are kept in such containers.

"Utilising the right attachment for the application and the type of drum is critical. Steel, ring plastic, fibre or egg-shaped drums all require different gripping pressures. Incorrectly handled, barrels can be dropped or perforated, resulting in spillages or seepage. The equipment must also comply with Health and Safety requirements", says Paul.

Drum tippling tines, which turn through 90 degrees, are capable of lifting two or three drums simultaneously from free-standing vertical positions or from horizontal positions, when stored in racking or pyramid stacks, eliminating the need for pallets.

Fitted to any type of fork-lift truck, in addition to the vast majority of reach trucks, their in-built forward reach enables vehicles to be loaded in block stacks of four wide with a second row being placed horizontally down the centre of the vehicle.

Drum clamps, another type of attachment, are also used for handling large drums and are capable of lifting one, two or four barrels simultaneously. Available in two designs, the arms for each are slightly different. Rolling rim drums are clamped in between the drum. Here again, both types of clamps rotate, allowing the contents to be emptied in a controlled manner, or where it is important to keep the contents mixed, inverted quickly.

"With increased efficiencies and 'just-in-time' deliveries now the norm, meeting companies' individual requirements is paramount. We supply drum clamps to many companies across a wide range of industries, some of whom purchase, while others contract hire, either on a short- or long-term basis, eliminating the need for capital expenditure", says Paul.

Besides offering the best materials handling solution for the requirements, we believe it essential that any such equipment is supplied in the most cost-effective manner if maximum benefit is to be derived", says Paul.
