Modem link brings benefits

Equipment which allows a major wallpaper manufacturer to meet stringent environmental requirements is being monitored and even repaired by engineers even though they are almost 100 miles away.
Durr EcoService, the facilities management division of Durr, the automotive paint shop systems supplier, has built a modem into a control panel at Vymura's Manchester plant to provide round-the-clock data on the performance of two Ecopure rotary concentrators and a regenerative thermal oxidiser (RTO) incinerator which disposes of solvents used in wallpaper printing.
Installed by Warwick-based Durr last year at a cost of £1.7 million, the equipment is covered by a two-year service contract which includes seven day, 24-hour emergency call-out and penalties in the event of breakdowns.
"This is the first time we have used a modem link to carry out fault analysis and rectification", explains Tony Avery, commissioning engineer, Durr Limited. "In the first three months it has been in operation, it has proved very successful, bringing enormous benefits to the client and to ourselves.
"Using the link, we can immediately spot actual or potential problems, which can save on the time and cost involved in sending engineers to the site."
If the link continues to operate successfully, similar installations could be carried out on other customers' premises. Technology, however, is unlikely to take over from human beings - Durr engineers are continuing to make regular visits to Vymura as part of the contract, providing expertise and personal service.
