New primers offer ace manufacturers a choice for compliance

Keywords: Kemira, Primers

With its introduction of a new two-pack epoxy HS primer, Kemira Coatings believes it is the first supplier to offer the UK ACE market a genuine choice between EPA-compliant water-based and solvent-based primers.

According to Kemira, while its competitors in general offer a single route to EPA compliance, it has developed both technologies in parallel, giving ACE manufacturers freedom to select the best match to their processing requirements and environmental strategy.

Users can choose between Kemira's waterborne Fontecoat and solvent-based Temacoat HS. Fontecoat offers a long-term solution to compliancc. Temacoat HS provides an intermediate step, with a claimed seven to eight years' life, for manufacturers wishing to avoid a head-on encounter with the higher cost of implementing water-based processing.

Temacoat HS requires no plant modification and, with Kemira's assistance in optimisation of the process, may even be introduced with reduced cost in comparison with non-compliant primers.

Future-proof Fontecoat makes EPA compliance simple, and its potential for water cleandown, reduced flammability, and simplified handling and storage helps to offset the higher cost of implementation.

Both primers are compatible with Kemira's new Temadur HS two-component polyurethane topcoat which achieves a high-performance finish with processing speed and energy saving benefits.

Temadur HS replaces previous Kemira compliant and non-compliant products for the ACE market with enhanced gloss and distinction of image. Energy costs reportedly can be cut by curing Temadur HS at a lower temperature, and it also claims to dry faster, allowing finished panels to be processed immediately following force drying.
