ICL make their automotive mark

Keyword: ICL

According to Industrial Copolymers Limited (ICL) its advanced resin formulations over recent years have led to the release of high-quality water-based coatings for the development and use of a variety of coatings used in the automotive industry.

In particular, Rover Group is quoted as having been indirectly the beneficiaries of such innovation, and many existing and future Rover products have and will utilise water based polyurethane/acrylic hybrid dispersion technology, specifically developed for a number of applications compliant with stringent engineering specifications (Plate 10).

Plate 10A PU/acrylic hubrid coating has been used on th Rover 400

ICL believe that the basis on which they have built their success has stemmed from the development of a close understanding of the requirements of the coating manufacturer, the constraints on their products and the timing of specific programmes in line with vehicle launch deadlines. Such a relationship exists between ICL and Sonnebom & Rieck (S&R). The work between the two companies has involved close screening of a variety of plastics, engineering specifications and end-user application processes.

The company have based their developments on the creation of water-based technology not only of high specification but also low in volatile organic compounds (VOCs) following the introduction of EPA guidelines introduced in 1998.

As well as PU/acrylic hybrid technology, ICL have demonstrated their approach to develop other resin technologies such as soft feel resin systems, flocking adhesives, floor and wall coatings, wood varnishes and coatings for concrete.
