drupa 2000 (18-31 May, Dusseldorf, Germany) is thought to be the single most important graphic communications event during 2000. With organizers anticipating more than 400,000 visitors from over 168 countries it will be the show case for new prepress and printing technology.

Pira International has just published the latest edition of their Five Year Technology Forecast of Printing and Publishing. This forecast study provides industry with a wealth of information which will help printers and suppliers understand which technology will win through to 2004.

Key findings in Pira International’s new forecast include:

  • digital printers will increase in speed and quality and exist with conventional printing;

  • digital print increases market share at the expense of litho and gravure; flexo takes more packaging share;

  • main press and finishing equipment developments are in set-up time reduction;

  • management information systems will become more important, linking with customers, suppliers and production equipment.

Five Year Technology Forecast of Printing and Publishing was written by John Birkenshaw, Roberto Minio and Sean Smyth.
