Plans are well advanced to virtually rid emissions of sulphur dioxide from the production process of Holliday Pigments, the manufacturer of ultramarine pigments. The commissioning of a newly constructed, »11 million, process gas desulphurisation unit is almost complete and will reportedly reduce emissions by 99.9 per cent. This means that the company will exceed all the requirements of UK, EU and global environmental legislation governing these issues.

The project, which was started in August 1997, also allows the potential for a significant increase in production capacity, to meet growing world-wide demand for the company's ultramarine pigments, which are used in a variety of industrial and consumer products, including plastics and artists' paints and colourings.

A by-product of the new process is the production of high quality sulphuric acid, which is sold on by the company for use in a wide range of industrial applications. Commenting on the completion of the project, Robert Rae, managing director of Holliday Pigments said, "So far, the plant is performing well and we are confident that we shall maintain our target of virtually eliminating emissions. The most obvious visual evidence is the disappearance of the plume from our 450ft high chimney, which has become a well-known landmark in the Hull area. This major investment demonstrates that Holliday Pigments has a long-term commitment to Hull and shows the importance we place on meeting our environmental responsibilities".
