With the introduction of IPPC, more industry sectors are having to tackle VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions. Haden Drysys Environmental, a prominent UK air pollution control supplier, recently stated that it recognises that the array of technology available to manufacturing and processing industry managers can be difficult to assess without specialist knowledge and so it has now made available a pilot plant version of its regenerative thermal oxidation equipment. This, it believes, will enable prospective customers to conduct a relatively low cost trial before purchasing full sized equipment.

As Paul Farrington, MD of Haden Environmental, explained, "We know that RTO technology offers the ultimate in security when eliminating the VOCs and odours which are given off by a large number of industries but, for clients who may never have had to make this kind of large capital purchase before, there is sometimes no substitute for seeing for yourself."

The pilot plant draws off a small side-stream from the process exhaust, which is then passed through the small two-canister RTO. The oxidiser, which can reportedly handle a capacity of 1,000NM3/hr, heats the air stream to a temperature of approximately 8008C, at which point the VOCs are effectively incinerated, leaving a clean air stream to be exhausted into the atmosphere. Measuring approximately 1m x 3m x 2m, the small pilot plant is transported to site by truck and is generally trialled for a few weeks in order to monitor performance under process conditions.

Haden applies its technology to air pollution control applications worldwide, in locations as far apart as Argentina and the Ukraine and in diverse industries.
