Major kiln installation

Thermal processing specialist Phillips Rema reports that it has secured a major new contract with chemical manufacturing company Kerr McGee in Belgium. The UK's Derbyshire-based Phillips Rema, a company established as a joint venture between British Rema and US-based Phillips Kiln Services, designed and installed a 23.1m section of kiln shell, used in the production of titanium dioxide.

Sales manager Peter Cope said: "When we surveyed Kerr McGee's existing kiln, it was found to be badly corroded internally and therefore operated inefficiently. The installation of the new kiln shell was carried out to strict deadlines to minimise disruption and plant shutdown time on-site."

Louis Kloeck of Kerr McGee comments:

We were very satisfied with the professional way in which Phillips Rema carried out the project. The company's documentation and focus on safety were of a high standard. Tower and cradles were put in place to support the 220-tonne section to be replaced and to support the retained section of kiln. The existing part of the kiln was removed at the joint positions to enable the old section to be flame-cut-ready for lifting out. The new replacement section, weighing 195 tonnes, was installed using a huge mobile crane and was welded carefully into position to ensure that its correct alignment was maintained.

Phillips Rema operated within a strict timescale, enabling Kerr McGee to restart production exactly on their scheduled date.
