UV-curing gloss lacquer

UV-curing gloss lacquer Keywords: Du Pont, Surface coatings, Food, Packaging

With UV-GL-5310, Du Pont Performance Coatings (DPC) launches a new type of its range of odourless, food-approved and high glossy UV top coats. According to Du Pont this new type excels by its easier handling: as most converters using high quality UV lacquers are working with machines which do not allow processing with a nitrogene blanket, this new development claims to offer the possibility of obtaining perfect curing without this technology and allows machine speeds of up to 180 metres per minute (using an Hg medium pressure radiator with a power of 2 x 160W/cm).

Further this material reportedly shows the same good properties as its predecessor, Herberts UV-GL-5300. The material is believed to be particularly suited for paper surfaces of food packagings, protecting paper and print against mechanical wear, humidity, grease and chemicals. Its optimum flow and its "brilliant" characteristics are said to make the new UV lacquer a low-cost, recyclable alternative to gloss foil lamination.

Herberts UV-Glanzlack GL-5310 claims many application benefits: the solvent-free 1K material is stated to require no mixing, not to have a limited potlife and has safe application characteristics – the gloss lacquer is said to be monomer-free and contains no ingredients that are subject to hazard labelling. Reportedly fully cured immediately, it enables a quick quality control. Machine speeds of 150 to 180m per minute are thought to be no problem for the product.

According to Du Pont the fully cured high-gloss lacquer surfaces are odourless, migration-free and resistant against environmental exposure. Subsequent sealing is possible up to a temperature of 200°C. The new gloss lacquer also claims extraordinarily low sliding friction compared with other UV lacquers – which is important for the trouble-free product flow on packaging lines. As a result the material is considered to be ideally suited for coffee packagings.

From the point of view of food legislation, Herberts UV-Glanzlack GL-5310 meets all national and EU guidelines. This opens up numerous other possibilities for flexible packaging as well as in the field of folding cartons, e.g. coating of soup and instant powder bags, cookie bags, mixpap cover foils, folding cartons for sweets and many more.
