"Simply Microscopy" was the brainchild of Leica Microsystems and the guiding thought behind its new microscopy platform. At present, the company is bringing a revolutionary series of digital microscopes to the world market that make work easier for users in previously unheard-of ways. The series includes the Leica DM4000 B and DM5000 B for routine and research biological applications, for example diagnostics, cancer research, cellular biology, and biotechnology. The Leica DM4000 M is designed for materials science applications in industry. The intelligent automation allows the user to configure complex procedures at will, quite simply by pressing a button. "In the future, our customers can concentrate fully and completely on their actual work-on the specimen they are examining" explains Marketing Manager Werner Kampe. "The instrument itself retreats completely into the background; thus our slogan is Simply Microscopy."

The usual time-consuming Köhler illumination adjustment is dispensed with, and various management functions relieve the user of almost all work. The instrument is immediately configured to the optimal settings. Next to the effortless handling, fine-tuned ergonomics are the highlight of the new microscopes.

Leica developers translated the results of an international study, conducted by the Fraunhofer Institute, into features which make handling the microscope more comfortable and allow fatigue-free working for long periods of time. "With our new microscopes," says Chairman Wolf-Otto Reuter, "which combine the brilliant optics for which Leica is known with completely new automation functions, we are aiming towards a broad world market in routine and research applications. With the user software and ergonomic finesse, which make handling the microscope as easy as child's play, we want to convince even more customers of the quality, practicality and high benefit value of Leica products."
