Carbon black: global demand to grow 3.4 percent yearly through 2006

The worldwide carbon black market is forecast to rise 3.4 percent per year through 2006 to 8.7 million metric tons, moderately lagging gains in rubber demand during the same period. The vast majority of carbon black finds use as a reinforcement in vulcanized rubber goods, including more than two-thirds for tires alone. Tire rubber demand is projected to lag gains significantly in non-tire rubber demand through 2006. Non-tire rubber consumption, on the other hand, will register a strong recovery after a poor performance over the past decade. Consequently, carbon black use in non-tire applications will realize significant benefits. Special blacks will also offer strong gains, although demand will be increasing from a relatively low base.

The large markets of China and India will post particularly impressive gains due to ongoing development of their respective motor vehicle and tire industries. Eastern Europe and Latin America will also exhibit above average gains in line with their ongoing development. Japan will maintain one of the world's largest markets for carbon black, though domestic demand will increase at a pace below the global average due to weaknesses in the country's motor vehicle and rubber industries. Western Europe will hold by far the slowest growth prospects among all major regions, primarily the result of a stagnant motor vehicle industry.
