Cargill announces R&D project to develop bio-based urethanes

Cargill Inc. has announced an agreement with the Kansas Polymer Research Center at Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, KS, to undertake a joint research and development program to produce soy-based polyols for use in urethane products. Cargill said that the project is the result of a company initiative to accelerate the development of industrial products from renewable resources. Announced in February, the initiative seeks to use Cargill's expertise in the agricultural- products market to create new industrial products and to form alliances with other organizations to bring those products to market.

The Kansas Polymer Research Centre, formed in 1994, employs nine polymer scientists engaged in applied research and technical assistance in the areas of polymers and plastics.

Jim Stoppert, who leads Cargill's industrial bioproducts development initiative, said "the project is part of an effort to develop a family of industrial polyols that will meet the diverse needs of the market".
