The Department of Colour Chemistry at the University of Leeds has recently approved a collaboration with Leicester College, which has a nationally acclaimed Centre of Vocational Excellence in Printing. This collaboration will allow students who have recently completed their HNC or HND at Leicester College, or are about to start their part-time HNC/HND in Leicester, to continue their studies further to complete (with advanced standing) a part-time distance learning BSc Honours degree in Printing, Packaging and Graphics at the University of Leeds, in collaboration with Leeds College of Technology, having being given credits for their HNC/HND awards. Professor Jim Guthrie, Director of the IMPRESS programme at Leeds University said: "We are delighted with this link with Leicester College as it will allow three excellent learning institutions to deliver high quality learning and teaching to highly motivated students. The future of the printing, packaging and graphics industries depends on schemes of this type."

The students on the IMPRESS programme investigate and develop skills in printing, business, management, colour science and chemistry, and is run by the Colour Chemistry Department, at the University of Leeds, in partnership with Leeds College of Technology.

Leicester College has very successfully run HNC and HND Print programmes for a number of years. The HNC is delivered as a part-time mode of study and is aimed at people already working within the print industry who wish to expand their skills for a career in management. The part-time HND is a top-up to the HNC programme and further enhances students' career prospects within the industry. Leicester College will be offering the HND in Print as a full-time course in September 2003, this will be the only full-time HND in Print course in the country.

Carolyn Rees, Programme Area Leader for Print and Manager of the National Print Skills Centre at Leicester College said "as a Centre of Vocational Excellence in Printing in the UK we are extremely pleased to work in partnership with the University of Leeds to ensure that students have an academic career path open to them. This can only be positive for the Print Industry as these students will be the managers of tomorrow".
