Adhesives formulators set to benefit from new technology

Keywords: Adhesives, Technology, Polyurethanes

Huntsman Polyurethanes' Adhesives, Coatings and Elastomers is unveiling its latest developments for adhesives' formulations, including an extended range of modified, low functional liquid SUPRASEC® (Plate 2) variants used for the production of reactive hot melt solutions. Combined with the team's expertise in the thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) industry using IROSTIC® products, this liquid MDI (diphenylmethane diisocyanate) technology results in significant improvements for the adhesive formulator. These include improvements in the initial green strength development, which can be achieved by adding high molecular weight TPUs to provide faster production and performance benefits.

The use of modified SUPRASEC variants such as SUPRASEC 2388 can significantly improve the hydrolytic stability of the formulated adhesive. To overcome the disadvantage of bad hydrolytic stability of typical polyesters, the whole system can be based on a liquid modified SUPRASEC variant. Alternatively, improvements can also be achieved when such products are added in certain amounts to the standard isocyanate component. The technology combines the advantages of improved quality of the end product with smooth operations through offering excellent crystallisation stability and an extended storage life compared to standard pure MDI.

The team is also presenting enhanced IROSTIC products for solvent-based TPU adhesives and IRODUR® products for the crosslinker market. The IROSTIC portfolio offers the user a wide range of different activation temperatures and solution viscosities for use in a variety of applications such as automotive, footwear, textiles or DIY adhesives. Special grades, including IROSTIC 7547, offer specific features such as excellent hydrolysis resistance together with good heat resistance and peel strength.

In addition, a full range of high quality and technical performance of polyurethane industrial adhesives raw materials for the production of professional and DIY systems are available from Huntsman Polyurethanes, complemented by a series of support services to maintain consistent operations. Applications vary from wood adhesives for construction to automotive adhesives.

Stefan Stein, Marketing Manager, Huntsman Polyurethanes ACE, comments: “The MDI portfolio for Industrial Adhesives displays a broad spectrum of reactivities and viscosities to yield a range of adhesives from liquid to solid, and almost any desired hardness. The result is a high degree of toughness, both binding and gap filling properties and water and chemical resistance. Consequently, SUPRASEC MDI is the raw material of choice for formulating products for diverse applications, including sealants, panel laminating adhesives and reactive hot melt adhesives.”
