Akzo Nobel opens new non-stick coatings factory in China

Akzo Nobel has announced the official opening of its new non-stick coatings facility in Dongguan city, China. The factory produces non-stick coatings, primarily for the rapid growing cookware industry in China, but also for a wide range of specialized industrial applications such as automotive pistons and copier rollers. It is located adjacent to the Akzo Nobel wood coatings plant, which was opened in 2001.

“This opening is another example of our sustained efforts to grow the global position of our non-stick coatings, and of the Coatings group's long-term commitment to the Chinese market” said Rudy van der Meer, Member of Akzo Nobel's Board of Management responsible for Coatings. “Our focus is to continue to expand in growth areas and the new non-stick facility will help to do just that by bringing us closer to our international customers, many of whom have out-sourced production there in recent years.”

Bill McPherson, General Manager of Akzo Nobel Powder Coatings, which includes the Non-Stick Coatings business, added: “China has become the biggest market for non-stick applications on cookware, bakeware and electrical appliances. A strong link between our non-stick organizations in the United States and China is crucial for the growth of our Chinese business since business in China is conducted according to international specifications.”

Akzo Nobel Coatings already operates six production sites in China, housing all the key businesses. One major operation is a 50-50 joint venture, all the others are majority or wholly owned. They are located in Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Shenzhen, Ningbo and Dongguan city. The Coatings group, which employs more than 1,600 people in China, has seen its sales increase to well over EUR 200 million in 2002, stemming from organic growth and selective acquisitions.

The Dongguan city site is situated in Southern China between Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The new non-stick coatings facility has so far employed 30 people in production, R&D, technical service and sales.
