EMPEROR® 2000 is a new high-performance carbon black pigment specially developed by Cabot Corporation for superior colour development in aqueous automotive base-coat systems (Plate 2).

Plate 2 EMPEROR 2000 provides a solution for the challenging requirements of aqueous automotive base-coats

The new pigment enables the high level of jetness colour associated with conventional solvent-based coatings to be achieved in aqueous systems, which are increasingly favoured by automotive manufacturers.

EMPEROR 2000 is based on high surface area carbon black with a unique chemical surface treatment developed by Cabot that allows for specific functional groups to be covalently attached to the surface of the carbon black. The pigment provides high colour strength with a strong blue undertone, resulting in superior jetness in aqueous base-coats and an Mc value over 300.

The unique chemical treatment and uniform surface chemistry provide excellent ease of dispersion that is difficult to achieve with conventional oxidized carbon blacks. In addition, the neutral pH and compatibility of the surface treatment with resins used in aqueous systems produce highly stable dispersions.

The superior colour performance, ease of dispersion and stability of EMPEROR 2000 provide a solution for the challenging requirements of aqueous automotive base- coats, according to Cabot.
