The new Smart Orbite diamond attenuated total reflectance (ATR) accessory, by Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE:TMO), offers users the many advantages of diamond ATR technology, coupled with the complete instrument integration that has become the hallmark of Nicolet FT-IR products (Plate 2). The Smart Orbit uses a real Type IIa diamond for ruggedness and versatility, allowing analysis of challenging samples. Another benefit is access to the entire infrared range, because the accessory is not limited by use of substrate materials or lenses.

In addition to the diamond crystal, the ATR accessory is compatible with multiple crystal materials, including Germanium, Zinc Selenide, Silicon, and AMTIR, to accommodate special sampling needs. The Smart Orbit accessory can be used up to 200°C and offers flow capabilities. Its unique crystal plate design makes cleaning and swapping crystals quick and easy. Most samples, even those that are caustic, abrasive or inflexible, can be analyzed with this accessory. The braised diamond element also allows for a higher pressure to be applied, which is important for challenging samples.

Smart Accessoriese integrate with Nicolet Avatare and Nicolet Nexuse FT-IR spectrometers.
