Thermo Electron offers new handbook on advanced FT-IR spectroscopy

Keywords: Spectra, Applications

Thermo Electron Corporation (NYSE:TMO) has produced an advanced FT-IR spectroscopy informational book, Principles, Experiments and Applications: Based on Research-Grade Nicolet™ FT-IR Spectrometers, written by Dr Eric Y. Jiang. This book will appeal as a practical technical reference guide to advanced users of Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometers, as well as a useful tutorial guide to users with little experience in advanced spectroscopy.

In the book, Jiang, a Principle Scientist at Thermo Electron, presents and discusses the most significant theories and principles of advanced FT-IR spectroscopy. With an emphasis on practical applications, the information provided can be invaluable to both routine and state-of-the-art research laboratories in the fields of chemistry, materials, biochemistry and medicine.

The majority of Jiang's research covers phase-resolved, time-resolved, and space-resolved FT-IR spectroscopy, amplitude-, phase-, sample- and polarization-modulation FT-IR spectroscopy as well as two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy. Central applications discussed in the book include:

  • Detection of nanowatt electrophotoluminescence;

  • Submicron photoacoustic spectral depth profiling of materials;

  • Rheo-optical characterization of complex polymers;

  • Nanosecond time resolved chemical or biological kinetics;

  • Focal plane array detector-based infrared imaging;

  • Spectral measurement of monolayer films;

  • Linear and circular dichroism on the absorbance scale of 10-3-10-5; and

  • Two-dimensional correlation spectroscopic analysis of heterogeneous materials.

Over the last decade, sophisticated FT-IR spectrometers have been successfully commercialized and deployed as a result of important technological developments to further modern research capabilities. Innovative research grade FT-IR spectrometers have opened up new possibilities for a variety of highly demanding experiments, which were previously either extremely difficult or almost impossible to perform with the instrumentation available. These experiments have pushed infrared spectroscopic techniques to new limits.

Thermo Electron's new book also contains information on the design, operation, and performance of research-grade Nicolet FT-IR spectrometers.
