The Asia Pacific Coatings Show 2004 proved to be a successful and well-attended event. Held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre on 3-4 June 2004, the exhibition experienced a continued influx of industry personnel throughout the two days attracting around 4,600 attendees from 45 different countries.

The show was officially opened by HE Mr Pinich Jarusambat, the Thai Minister for Industry, who toured the show discussing business in Thailand with exhibitors, and explaining how important the Thai market is to the coatings industry.

The first day was a thriving success with many key industry personnel attending; helping suppliers and customers to meet and discuss business within the coatings market. “The first few hours have been busy”, said Lonnie Bryant, Senior Engineer at Atofina Japan, “The potential for business is high, due to the large crowds. One of our products is well established in Asia and we are aiming to expand the rest of our product range in the Asia region”.

The Technical Conference entitled “Innovations within Science and Technology of Organic Coatings”, organised alongside the Coatings Research Institute – CoRI, attracted a good audience, with around 45-50 people present at all times. Klaus Schulte of BYK Chemie, Germany, said, “We have had a very busy show and I enjoyed being a speaker at the conference. There were some good quality papers this year, although unfortunately I did not get to see all of them, as we were so busy on our stand”.

After the first day of the Asia Pacific Coatings Show 2004, exhibitors, delegates and speakers attended the Fourth Asia Pacific Coatings Show Awards Evening at the JW Marriott. Winners of the categories were awarded their trophies in front of 120 key personnel.

The winners are as follows:

Marketing Campaign of the Year, sponsored by APCJ, Metalfx

Innovative Product Award, sponsored by Phillippine Association of Paint Manufacturers (PAPM), Johnson Matthey

Environmental Award, sponsored by the Thai Paint Manufacturers Association (TPMA), University of Technology in Mumbai

Best Conference Paper, sponsored by the Coatings Research Institute (CoRI), Engelhard

Professor V.C. Malshe, professor of paints technology at the University Institute of Chemical Technology in Mumbai, said on receiving his award, “I was very surprised to receive the environmental award, as there were a lot of good nominations. However, I am pleased to have won, and I enjoyed the Awards ceremony and dinner very much”.

The second day of the event, again proved to be a hit with the exhibitors and at the end of the show, Huntsman’s David Evans said, “This is the first time we exhibited at the Asia Pacific Coatings Show and we chose an excellent position. We were opposite the Exhibitor Business Presentations which attracted large crowds, which then came on to our stand”.

The Exhibitor Business Presentations, which are free to exhibitors and visitors, were indeed well attended. Speakers were pleased with overall attendance to their presentations, with one paper attracting over 70 people.

The exhibition, once again provided a showcase for suppliers of raw materials and products used in the manufacture of paint and adhesives. Many companies made strong contacts from the region and beyond, using the show as a launch pad for new developments and products.

Feedback from the exhibitors was very positive. Fan Liang from the marketing department at Yipin Pigments said, “We have had a successful show here in Thailand and expanding the event to three days next year will give us more time to see each customer individually. As a company we think it is important to attend APCS and MECS each year, and last year we exhibited at the Korean Coatings Show, which was also a successful event for us. I think the Coatings Group are very good organisers and I trust them when it comes to staging good exhibitions”.
