The Society of Imaging Science and Technology's NIP 20, the 20th International Conference on Digital Printing Technologies, gathered close to 700 imaging and digital printing experts in Salt Lake City from 31 October to 5 November 2004. With close to 220 presentations during the conference, ca 80 of which were concerned with materials research in digital printing technologies (inks, toners, print media) and 44 companies in the accompanying exhibition, the event again gave an excellent overview of the state-of-the-art and current trends in this rapidly evolving field. In a keynote lecture on Thursday, Itai Halevy, Executive Vice-President and Chief Marketing Officer of Scitex Vision, reviewed the industrial printing market as follows: In 2004, the entire industrial print market amounts to ca 800 bn USD worldwide. Digital printing has a market share of 10 per cent of that amount, which Halevy expects to double by 2010. Breaking down the market into five sectors, he went on to analyse that Packaging Printing today accounts for 320 bn USD (0.5-1 per cent digital, expectation for 2010: 5-10 per cent), Commercial Printing and Publishing for 200 bn USD (15-20 per cent digital, 2010: 30-40 per cent), Textile Printing for 80 bn USD (1-2 per cent digital, 2010: 5 per cent), Outdoor Advertising for 80 bn USD (20-25 per cent digital, 2010: 40-45 per cent) and Specialty Printing for 120 bn USD (1 per cent digital, 2010: 2 per cent).
