Rhodopas® Ultragreen, the “eco-friendly” binder from Rhodia PPMC

Keywords: Paints, Coatings technology

Rhodia has expanded its Rhodopas® Ultragreen range for decorative paints with its latest binder Rhodopas® Ultragreen AVD 247. The Rhodopas® Ultragreen range combines respect for the environment with technical performance to meet the requirements of the company's European customers. Rhodia performance products for multifunctional coatings (PPMC).

Capitalising on its expertise in polymer dispersions, Rhodia introduced in 2001 its “eco-efficient” solution to the market – Rhodopas(r) Ultragreen, an APEO-free (alkylphenol ethoxylate) binders range with a very low volatile organic compound (VOC) level, used for water-based and plasticiser-free formulas.

The original product, Rhodopas® Ultragreen DS 2800, shows a high binding power and can be formulated without any coalescing agent with a polymer level close to the level used in traditional paints. Its technical performance, very close to that of standard dispersions, has allowed it during the past three years to stand out as one of the best products on the market – opening up the Northern European markets to Rhodia, whilst at the same time winning over Southern Europe. Moreover, Rhodopas® Ultragreen DS 2800 has a very low VOC level (below 400 ppm) and a very light odour, thus enabling it to surpass the requirements of the European Union environmental regulations introduced in 2004, which will come into force in 2007 and 2010.

Following this first successful launch, Rhodia has expanded its eco-efficient binders range, adapting it to the specific requirements of its various markets. Based on vinylic copolymers, Rhodopas® Ultragreen AVD 247 is the new binder in the Rhodopas® Ultragreen range. Its rheology leads to a high viscosity and a smooth texture, as well as a silk finish that is particularly sought after in medium PVC formulas.

With its complete Rhodopas® Ultragreen binders range, Rhodia is focusing its innovation on the development of environmentally friendly binders, whilst responding to the requirements of decorative paints formulators in terms of technical performance and cost reduction.
