Information Research (IRL) have announced the publication of its third report on the powder coatings sector in Europe, titled The market for powder coatings in Europe.

The market for powder coatings in Europe is estimated at almost 373,000 tonnes, taking into account the 16 key economies of western Europe and the five major economies from eastern Europe (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Russia and Turkey). Demand is apportioned across the two regions with western Europe accounting for nearly 310,000 tonnes and the eastern European markets the other 63,000 tonnes.

The overall characteristics of the western European market are summarised in the following chart (Figure 2)

Consumption patterns vary quite considerably with national strengths as seen in the following points:

  • Italy, where powder coatings output now approaches 110,000 tonnes, is now a market of 86,000 tonnes and the outright leader in every application except for automotive component finishing, where Germany beats it into a close second place. Building on its strong reputation for powder coatings, Italy is now a vigorous exporter of powder coatings, probably to eastern Europe.

  • Light metal fabrication is the major finishing application for powder coatings in western Europe, while in eastern Europe the leading application is in white goods, particularly in Russia, which has seen investment in this area, and also in Turkey, which has a strong white goods industry.

  • Norway is the leading consumer of functional powder coatings in percentage terms, accounting for about 10 percent of its market, as a result of its strong petrochemical sector.

Terry Knowles, Business Manager at IRL said: “The powder coatings sector in Western Europe has struggled in recent years, as a result of shifting investment patterns, the relocation of manufacturing, rising raw material prices and in some countries the completion of technology substitution within the industrial sector.
